FORTRESS

Three-Week Defence Tech & Dual-Use Residency

MANIFESTO

Fortress base

Fortress is an intensive residency for people building technology for the security of Finland and its allies. We don't do SaaS, we don't do consumer tech, and we don't do anything because the market looked interesting. We exist for one purpose: to take serious dual-use and comprehensive-security teams from idea to working prototype in three weeks: built against real needs.

Fortress isn't tied to one place. Each sprint runs where the conditions, the talent, and the needs for that theme actually are, a different city, a different focus, the same intensity. Ground warfare in one sprint, maritime security in another, cyber in the next. We bring in mentors who've spent their careers inside the field — procurement, operations, research, the ground — and they give you an honest read on what you're building long before you'd find out the hard way.

Defense and security don't work like other industries. There's no VC playbook here, no growth-hacking your way to a government contract. Sales cycles run long, the regulatory environment is serious, and when something reaches the field that doesn't work, the consequences are nothing like a bad quarter. We are building this with people who understand that — and who start from a real problem.

HOW IT WORKS

We start from real needs, then find the people to solve them. Before each sprint, we work with the defence field to identify the actual capability gaps — the real problems that need solving. We then publish the fleet themes and choose the participants specifically against those needs. You're not showing up hoping your idea fits somewhere; you're building against a problem someone actually has, defined by the people who have it.

Three weeks, idea to prototype. Each sprint runs three weeks. Teams take a defined challenge from concept to a working prototype at a meaningful technology-readiness level, using civilian technology components adapted for security use.

Mentors from inside the field. Throughout the sprint you work directly with mentors who've spent their careers in defense and security. You will actively receive mentoring, feedback, and connections from the people who matter.

Tested. The point isn't a slide-deck demo day. It's a prototype that has met real terrain, real conditions, and the real end-users it's built for.

WHO THIS IS FOR

Founders, students, and early-stage teams building in dual-use and defence — ground systems, sensors and detection, autonomy, AI, tactical communications, and adjacent fields. We prefer teams with technical depth. We care that you're starting from a real problem, not retrofitting a consumer product because the market looked interesting.

Participation is built around Finnish teams and sovereign capability — because comprehensive security and security of supply ultimately mean Finland having people and companies that can build.

Three weeks in Lappeenranta. We run four to six sprints a year, each addressing defined capability problems with a small cohort of builders.

If you've read this far and it sounds like what you've been looking for, apply. We don't need a polished deck. We need to understand what you're building and why you're the right person to build it.
